Setting a new record for ‘world’s nerdiest auction’
What’s the most impressive game in your collection? That gold Ocarina of Time cart? Pretty much any Mega Man game? Well, Michael Thommason owns it, and now he’s selling his 11,000 strong collection off.
The auction on specialist site GameGavel includes every U.S. release for 21 systems, and many more from almost a hundred other consoles. There are absolutely no repeats, thousands of pristine sealed copies, and more sports games than you thought existed.
The winner also gets his Guinness World Record certificate from 2012, a lifetime subscription to Retro Magazine, and an autographed copy of the very first issue, in which the collection features.
Thommason’s mini museum stems from his 30 year career in games retail, with first dibs on rare trade ins and factory fresh new releases. Having previously funded his wedding by selling a portion of the collection, family commitments have forced his hand.
“I simply have an immediate family and extended family that have needs that need to be addressed. While I do not wish to part with these games, I have responsibilities that I have made to others and this action is how I will help meet them.”
The bid has jumped just over the course of writing this story, but currently stands at over $90,000. Best start counting those pennies.
